I for one have never stopped wondering or pondering over why we prefer sweeping the unpleasant and stark truth pertaining to our increasingly violent and barbaric nation and society under the carpet and pretending as if everything around is hunky dory; peaceful and tranquil.........
Newspapers; twenty four news channels; the social media and all other avenues of circulation and dissemination of news/information are abuzz with stories/anecdotes/incidents of mindless/senseless/wholly unnecessary and undesired violence and yet our preferred and so called response is that the same did not befall me or my immediate family so why should I bother or then take due cognisance of the same........
Why don't we fail to read the writing on the wall and conveniently shrug off the undeniable fact that whatever happened or befell somebody/someone else today can also happen to us our beloved and irreplaceable family members; friends; relatives and other people you care for even before you can begin to imagine or envisage the same.........
Place yourselves in the shoes of the family members of the 31 year old Delhi resident who was unerringly knocked down and killed within an instant by a speeding Mercedes car driven by a raving maniac who was a week or so short of his eighteenth birthday when his satanic obsession with speed and cheap thrills ended up costing a fellow Delhiite his precious and irreplaceable life.........
What is even more galling is the inglorious fact that the Delhi Police who ceaselessly claims to be with you and for you till eternity and beyond proved that it was once again on the side of the high and the mighty as it always has been and will continue to be as the very same people are primarily responsible for their economic prosperity and overflowing coffers........
They compounded the misery of the accident victim's grieving and disconsolate family by firstly registering cases against the so called minor who did not even possess the mandated and requisite driving lesson to begin with under bailable and seemingly comic sections of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Motor Vehicles Act thereby facilitating this charade of his being bailed out by his scavenging and money grabbing lawyer a mere three or so after he was taken into custody by the Delhi Police sleuths........
In an effort to save face and plaster over their inadequacies and penchant for giving all cases involving the moneyed and privileged folks a quiet and dignified burial they then proceeded to indulge in the farcical exercise of apprehending the so called minors father and booking a case against him for enabling his beloved son to drive the "deathly" car despite being aware of the fact that his son had been booked for rash; negligent and reckless driving on a minimum of three occasions in the past one year or so.........
As was widely expected and anticipated; the case registered against the father of the victim ended up falling flat on it's face and getting laughed out of the court by a judge who took the Delhi Police to task for wasting the court's precious and invaluable time by filing a case that was not even worth the paper on which the very same was filed..........
Their (the Delhi Police's) latest ploy is to file an affidavit seeking permission to try the accused as an adult as he turned eighteen a mere four days or so after causing the victim's untimely demise and seeking permission to file a case against him under the section of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to culpable homicide not amounting to murder or some such........
Friends/fellows/countrymen and women; the time for procrastination; lethargy; indifference; callousness and classic ostrich mentality is well past us and it is incumbent on us to take a well thought out; cultivated; logical and unequivocal stance about unflinchingly and determinedly standing up for every fellow Indian who suffers either a supposed or then palpable injustice no matter however insignificant or trivial the same may seem at the time.......
We are fast on our way towards becoming a banana republic where the supposedly high and mighty have their way every single time notwithstanding the enormity or the consequences of the crimes caused by them more times then they can count........
Don't believe me; then pause tarry a moment and conjure up the image of a Salman Khan who remains scot free despite causing the death of a pavement dweller and critically injuring four others by running them down under the wheels of his high end SUV more than a decade and a half ago or so..........
