Our national capital certainly seems to be living up to it's reputation of being the crime capital of the world; if the plethora of rapes, numerous incidents of murderous road rage and highly deplorable racist attacks on Indians hailing from the north eastern parts of the country weren't enough, here comes along an incident of a roadside food vendor being stabbed to death in full public view because he committed the cardinal sin of refusing a local hoodlum a free meal........
Yes, you certainly did read it right the first time around as a 62 year old roadside food vendor was indeed stabbed to death in full public view in northwest Delhi's Sultanpuri area on Saturday afternoon as he had shown the temerity and spine to take on a local goon who demanded a free meal from him as if the same was his divinely ordained right.......
Kashi Ram was stabbed at least a minimum of 5 times a little after 11:30 am or so on Saturday and died within minutes after this murderous assault at the very same time where he had been selling his delectable "chhole bhature" for the last three decades and more.........
According to police sources the accused is none other than 28 year old Gurmeet, a local hoodlum and history sheeter who inhabits the very same locality; Gurmeet who has a long list of criminal cases filed against him was taken into custody on Saturday night from one of his numerous hideouts on charges of murdering the 62 year old.........
Quoting eyewitness accounts, the investigating officer adds that GUrmeet happened to be one of the first customers who frequented the vendors lot on that fateful Saturday forenoon; Gurmeet who already owed the enterprising vndor a considerable sum of money was asked to clear his earlier dues by the vendor who refused to serve him another helping of his delectable fare until his previous/pending dues were duly cleared........
What started off as a simple argument soon escalated into a full fledged altercation with profanities flowing freely from both sides; Gurmeet however took matters a little to far by whipping out a knife and stabbing Kashi Ram a minimum of 5 times in the chest and abdominal area in full publkic view before Kashi Ram collapsed in a pool of rapidly spreading blood and guts..........
Brandishing his knife like a crazed banshee Gurmeet managed to make good his escape from the hot spot and the local police officials who had been alerted by bystanders in the meanwhile made a beeline towards the spot and rushed the grievously injured victim to the nearby Maharishi Valmiki Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival........
Gurmeet's relief and sense of freedom were however shortlived and he was duly arrested from a friends' house late on Saturday evening the SHO of the local police thana concluded.........
One wonders whether human lives have indeed become so cheap in our motherland that the mere refusal to serve an allegedly free meal is cause enough to snuff out the same; a callous, unresponsive and completely compromised police force and overburdened and overworked judiciary only compound matters as habitual offenders continue to cock a snook at the law entrenched by the age old belief that decades will pass before the litany of complaints against them will reach the sentencing stage.........
