ATM's (automated teller machines) are certainly being used for purposes that the people who conjured them up did not foresee in their worst nightmares; a woman was brutally assaulted and left in a near dead state in one such contraption and now comes the use of a woman being sexually assaulted in another such contraption.........
A 32 year old mentally disabled woman was allegedly sexually assaulted (raped) by her assailant within the confines of an unmanned or unguarded ATM located on Andul Road in the Sankrail area (in West Bengal's Hooghly district) a little after midnight on Tuesday (in the wee hours of Wednesday morning)........
Her suspected assailant however woefully failed in his attempt to free the spot as he was nabbed by a conscientious and duty bound pedestrian who was alerted by the victim's piteous screams and heart rending cries for help........
The homeless mentally handicapped ot unbalanced woman was roaming the streets of the Sankrail area in the dark of the night looking for a suitable place to spend the rest of the night when the accused one S.K. Rajesh pounced upon her and committed this inhuman atrocity on her.......
Rajesh 37, makes his living by working in a factory located in the city's Danesh Shaikh area after dark and is said to be happily (?) married and the father of two young children to boot.......
According to police sources, Rajesh firstly spotted the hapless and defenceless woman at Pondra in the Nazirgunj area at around 12:30 am or so and then proceeded to unceremoniously drag her into the confines of a nearby ATM, he also made a furtive effort to pull down the shutters but only managed to pull them down halfway and then proceeded to force himself on the woman despite the ATM as well as the street outside being well lit and accessible to the public.....
Alas! a businessman who answers to the name of Sanchit Hansda was returning home on his motorcycle and he stopped at the very same ATM in order to withdraw some money.......
Sanchit was initially perturbed by the partially downed shutters and then startled by the woman's screams for help; without wasting any time, he made his way into the ATM where he found Rajesh trying to make a getaway.........
Showing remarkable alacrity and presence of mind, Snachit nabbed Rajesh by the collar and started making attempts to subdue him; he was soon joined by a group of men who were similarly alerted by the cries of the victim.......
Sanchit and his fellow good samaritans fell upon the assailant with renewed ferocity, beat him black and blue and then proceeded to hand him over to the personnel manning the nearest police station.......
Sanchit and his band of merry do gooders then proceeded to take the bleeding and badly injured woman to the nearest government medical facility for the much required treatment; the area police subsequently shifted her to the Howrah district hospital for a series of tests that conclusively established the occurrence of rape.......
A Kolkata mental hospital is the 32 year old mentally challenged woman's abode right now (she was shifted there on Wednesday evening) and doctor's attending on her are extremely optimistic about her chances of recovering near normal sanity and also about her ability to forget the incident as a "bad dream"........
Senior Police Officials have also confirmed the fact that they have obtained the CCTV footage from within the ATM and that the same has confirmed the occurrence of the ghastly incident beyond all reasonable doubt; Rajesh was duly produced before a judicial magistrate on Wednesday and duly remanded to five days of police custody by him.......
Police officials have also said that they are waiting for the deeply traumatised and terrified victim to regain a degree of coherence and record her statement as the same would prove to be the final nail in Rajesh's coffin........
One wonders why an overwhelming majority of men are unable to control and subdue the beast within them; a mentally challenged or disabled woman is a person who requires your help and empathy and looking upon or even considering such a person as an object of sexual gratification certainly does no credit whatsoever to the menfolk of this glorious country.........
