Things certainly seem to be on a steady downward incline as far as the salient issue of the Indian woman's safety and security are concerned; what with men of all ages shapes and sizes sexually exploiting them with scant regard for the law and the authorities (read governments) doing little else apart from mouthing homilies and rhetorical reassurances........
A 22 year old engineering student hailing from the riparian state of Punjab was allegedly abducted, then driven to an undisclosed location, confined within the same against her will and subsequently gang raped on numerous occasions by three men over a four day period........
The victim a long time resident of Harupal Village in the Batala area of Gurdaspur district was forcefully abducted from right outside her abode by one Jaspreet Singh (her one time suitor) and his two comrades in arms on the fateful day of March 10,2014 while she was visiting her village during a break between semesters........
Her horrendous ordeal started with her being bundled into a car against her will and then being driven down to an undisclosed area in the neighbouring Hoshiarpur district where she was confined to a dark, desolate, isolated and filthy room and repeatedly raped by the above mentioned Jaspreet Singh and his cohorts times without end........
Fate intervened on the fortuitous day of Friday, March 14,2014 when the victim was accorded the golden opportunity of making good her escape from her tormentors; she grabbed this opportunity with both hands and this plucky student of a Mohali based engineering college somehow managed to vend her way back to home and hearth, thanks to the timely help rendered to her by a few concerned citizens.......
She then proceeded to file a police complaint against Jaspreet and his comrades at a neighbouring police station in conjunction with her parents; in her complaint she alluded to the fact that Jaspreet who is a resident of the neighbouring Sadanwali village managed to bundle her into his car with considerable help from his two cohorts and then made off with her to Hoshiarpur........
Jaspreet had earlier expressed his willingness to marry her and was in a huff ever since his marriage proposal was unceremoniously rebuffed by the victim and her parents; "Jaspreet and his friends drove right up to my doorstep on the afternoon of March 10 while I was standing outside the gate and regaling myself in the glorious rays of the bracing afternoon sun"......
"They then used considerable force in their clumsy though successful attempt to force me into their car and I even suffered numerous bumps and bruises on my persona as a result of their strong arm tactics, they then proceeded to drive their vehicle towards this room in Hoshiarpur where they held me against my will and forced themselves on me more times than I can remember", the victim said in her complaint........
Police sources did confirm the fact that the victim's irate and worrying father had filed a complaint against Jaspreet and others in which he had clearly stated the fact that the said Jaspreet had abducted his nubile daughter a few hours earlier........
A detailed medical examination that was carried out on the victim at a government run medical facility has conclusively established the occurrence of rape and the police have proceeded to file cases against Jaspreet, one Vicky from Hoshiarpur and a third yet unnamed and unidentified male under all the applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code........
Three teams have been constituted so that the marauding trio can be arrested at the earliest and the Punjab Police higher ups have even taken the pains to inform the police forces of neighbouring states about the developments in this case and beseeched them to keep a lookout for these three absconders/fugitives from the law......
Being wiser after the occurrence of an inhuman incident of this magnitude is indded old hat; one wonders why the police forces have not initiated any pre emptive steps/measures to nip these rapidly rising crimes against women in the bud despite an 18-23% increase being reported nationwide........
Is it because they simply do not have adequate numbers on the ground to ensure that the due concerns of the woman pertaining to their safety and security are adequately addressed or then is it because woman simply do not fit into the scheme of things as ordained by their political lords and masters.......
Whatever may be the reason, the day is not far off when the fathers and brothers of these ravaged women will turn vigilantes and take matters into their own hands as the system has woefully failed to discharge it's primary objective of keeping it's citizens safe and secure........
