All those soothsayers who predicted that the next round of world or intercinine wars would be fought over water and the like certainly seem to have hit the nail on it's head this time around......
A desultory; scorching and seemingly nondescript afternoon in Haryana's Nuh village (45 kms from Gurgaon) abruptly sparked to life and a lot more besides when an irate and incensed woman stabbed her neighbour to death and made good her escape from the spot before stunned bystanders could react........
According to disbelieving and incredulous fellow villagers a heated and particularly acrimonious quarrel broke out amongst the two women who incidentally happen to be neighbours and the best of friends to boot as the murder victim who had arrived at the designated spot where the state Jal Board's tanker dispensed the much valued and cherished elixir of life insisted that she would fill up the four buckets that she ahd arrived with before her so called well wisher and friend,,,,,,
Lo and behold!!!! the next thing that anyone who had gathered at the prospective crime scene was the particularly maddened and frenzied woman returning from her modest dwelling with a wicked looking dagger that was soon found buried to the hilt in the chest of the woman who had insisted on the first share of the spoils........
Fearing the wrath of the seemingly incensed and frenzied woman the rest of the villagers who had gathered at the murder site ran helter skelter and only wended their way back to the spot rather simperingly and hesitantly after the murderess had fled the spot....
Their cowardliness and herd mentality ended up costing the middle aged victim her priceless and irreplaceable life as she had unceremoniously collapsed in a heap and bled to death on the spot as her fellow villagers could not muster the collective courage to rush to her aid......
A few villagers who managed to muster up their courage and take hold of their senses then proceeded to inform the local police sleuths who regally arrived at the murder site a good 45 minutes to one hour after the ghastly and seemingly senseless crime had been committed and then proceeded to send the deceased's mortal remains to the government hospital for the stipulated post mortem as well as deigned to record the statements of the numerous eyewitnesses to the particularly sordid proceedings......
A case of murder has since been registered against the wanted murderess under the relevant and applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code and the much stereotyped and much abused manhunt has been launched in adjoining areas in order to apprehend the assailant at the earliest........
Trust particularly myopic and escapist state governments to gloss over the genesis of this perennial problem that plagues this village as well as countless others every single year during the scorching and parched summer season as quickfix solutions such as despatching water tankers twice a week will only lead to a spate of such mindless crimes unless the concerned government's shed their age old lethargy and look for long term solutions that could prove to be the panacea for this malaise that has been plaguing our motherland since August 15; 1947 onwards........
