A man in his early thirties was taken into custody by the West Bengal Police on Wednesday on alleged charges of having brutally raped a mentally challenged woman within the claustrophobic confines of an unmanned ATM kiosk located on Howrah districts Andul Road late on Tuesday night.......
A local court sentenced the accused to five days police custody after he was duly produced before it on Wednesday afternoon and this latest instance of rape only serves to compound the state government's numerous problems pertaining to this issue as it has been at the receiving end for it's lackadaisical and somewhat callous attitude on this contentious and controversial issue........
According to the local police bigwigs, the mentally challenged victim has since been sent to a government run hospital for medical tests (read tests to establish the occurrence of rape) and the requisite counselling that is provided to all rape victims........
This horrific incident occurred between 11;30 and 11:50 pm on that fateful Tuesday night and the accused one S.K. Rajesh was duly arrested from a friend's place on Wednesday morning following an anonymous tip off regarding his whereabouts.........
According to two local youths who were eyewitnesses to the incident Rajesh dragged the Hindi speaking mentally challenged woman into the cloistered confines of an Indicash ATM kiosk and then proceeded to brutally sexually assault her, the two youths in question did make a valiant attempt to subdue the accused but he somehow managed to keep them at bay and fled the spot........
These very same youngsters then made their way to the local police station after midnight and duly filed an FIR against the accused; while the victim who suffered bleeding injuries on her nether regions and other parts of her anatomy during the assault is currently undergoing treatment at the state government run Howrah District Hospital........
Yet another affirmation or attestation of the dictum about man being the most dangerous, devious and depraved animal of them all........
