Every religion, religious texts, scriptures, edicts, tales, and last but not the least are replete or then choc a bloc with examples of the unalienable bond between man and animals as well as mutual acts of kindness,valour and nobility........
Alas!!! a group of residents belonging to a Ahmedabad locality (New Ranip) not only take strong exception to this age old practice or then should I say custom of mutual/peaceful co-existence and a few of them were even booked for animal cruelty on Thursday night.........
Suresh, Piyush, Hasmukh, Rushit, Shankar, Manisha and Chetna Patel were booked by the local cops on multiple counts of animal cruelty filed against them by Devika Bhatia, 29, a non resident Indian who shifted to this locality from the US of A some two years ago as well as animal rights NGO People for Animals.......
According to Devika; both she as well as her other family members took unto themselves the onus of feeding the neighbouring strays as well as other dogs who throng the said locality off and on; but their philanthropic and humanitarian tendencies soon became an eyesore for their scores of neighbours who too to threatening them with dire consequences and abusing the Bhatia family members in the foulest terms every single time they saw them feeding these strays..........
Matters however came to ahead on the afore mentioned Thursday night when as per their daily habit; Devika's father Kalpesh Bhatia and younger sibling Kalpesh Bhatia headed out of their gate with containers full of food meant for these famished strays and lo and behold!!! a group off 20 odd strays soon gathered around them..........
Incensed and irate neighbours who had been abusing the Bhatia family ad nauseum for reasons best known to themselves set upon this group of hungry dogs with sticks, iron rods and stones and within the batting of an eyelid starting raining blows on the hapless and defenceless canines......
Initially taken aback by the crowd frenzy; the two Bhatia males soon waded into the crowd and started thwarting the attempts of their neighbours to beat these neglected and long suffering strays senseless; seeing the two male members of the Bhatia family opposing them; the neighbour turned their collective fury on them and started raining on blows on them thereby causing bleeding injuries to the father/son duo........
Alerted by the cries of anguish emanating from the throats of her father/brother as well as famished dogs; Devika rushed to their aid only to be welcomed with a series of blows which left her reeling under the same; better sense however prevailed when other residents of the locality came to their aid on hearing the sounds of the fracas and even deigned to take the Bhatia family to a neighbouring hospital for the much desired medical attention..........
As soon as they returned from the hospital; Devika took upon herself the onus of registering a police complaint against her devilish and blood thirsty neighbours and the fact that numerous calls to the police helpline did not yield any concrete results did not dampen her spirits; she soon proceeded to the neighbouring police station in the company of members from the People for Animals (NGO) against the afore mentioned devils in human skin following which cases of cruelty to animals were registered against them........
One really wonders who the animals in this case really are the gaggle of so called humans who set upon defenceless canines with an unexplainable vengeance or the strays who were only responding to the love and care lavished on them by the Bhatia's........... .
