Married men certainly seem to be getting more innovative, inventive and intellectual as far as seeking reasons to divorce their lawfully wedded wives go with allegations of practising witchcraft being the latest one in India's smaller cities.........
A long suffering married woman was unceremoniously bundled out of her husband's abode in Surat city's Pimplod area as she allegedly practised or then indulged in acts of witchcraft guaranteed to cause grave and incurable harm to the lives of her husband and in-laws; but her ordeal did not end with her unceremonious exit as the scheming husband and in-laws also sough the dissolution of this marriage for the very same reason......
The victimised woman who only mustered up the courage to file an official complaint against her tormentors during the course of the last week or so was harangued out of her husband's house in may 2014 and was living with her parents in the same city's Mahuva locality ever since........
matters however came to a head last week (Monday morning) when the victim received the divorce papers served on her by her husband through a messenger and the husband even threatened to malign her reputation and brand her as a woman of easy virtue if she continued with her refusal to sign the same.........
A the end of her tether and having completely run out of patience; the woman who had thus far borne every ignominy and insult heaped upon her with stoic silence proceeded to lodge an official complaint against her tormentors; her husband Vinod Naika; father-in-law Dhiru; mother-in-law Sudha and last but not the least sister-in-law Sudha as they were more than willing accomplices in every atrocity committed against her.......
Acting with remarkable alacrity on the victim's complaint; the Mahuva police station cops proceeded to book or file cases against the four accused persons on charges of repeatedly torturing her as well as branding her a witch or "chudail".........
According to the written complaint filed by the victim; she got married to her husband Vinod in February 2005 and everything was hunky dory till the fateful month of January 2013 when her incessant ordeal begun; the victim also disclosed the fact that the alliance between her and her husband had also borne a son within the first 14 months of their married life..........
Circa 2013 heralded the almost daily routine of beatings, mental torture; choicest epithets and abuses being rained upon her and so and so forth; the victim also pointed out the fact that she did complain to her parents about the treatment being meted out to her in her husband's house but her parents advised her to reconcile herself with her circumstances for the sake of her young son........
But things only got worse since November 2013 when her husband and in-laws forbade her to visit her parents house and even prevented her parents from visiting their daughter as they did not want them to do so; but the serving of the divorce papers proved to be the last straw and the same led to the filing of the complaint that resulted in cases being filed against the four accused persons........
Yet another manifestation of our so called "civilised and woman friendly" social system and set up that seems to take undue pride in making it's women folks lives nothing short of a living hell.........
