In an unbridled and euphoric triumph of the humanitarian spirit and universality of music; iconic Pakistani Ghazal and Geet singer Ghulam Ali will be performing at a music festival that got underway at Varanasi's iconic age old Sankat Mochan Temple with a lot of fanfare and brouhaha early on Wednesday morning...........
One may do well to recall the fact that the quaint and historical city of Varanasi is currently represented in parliament by none other than the incumbent Prime Minister Narendrabhai Damodardas Modi and he tweeted his considerable disappointment at not being able to make it for this annual event graced by eminent musicians from all four corners of planet earth with growing regularity.........
According to the organisers more than 50 reputed artistes of the eminence of Sarod Maestor Amjad Ali Khan and his equally illustrious sons Amaan and Ayaan; Kathak exponent Birju Maharaj; Bansuri virtuoso Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia as well as Tabla Maestro Hasmat Ali Khan will be gracing the occasion this time around.........
Duly confirming the fact that Ustaad Ghulam Ali's thumri recital will be the first such recital rendered by a Pakistani artiste in the temple's centuries long history; the mahant (chief priest) of the mandir Vishwambhar Nath Mishra quipped, "music is a religion that transcends all human made barriers of nationality and religion and hence who are to object when Lord Hanuman wants Ghulam Ali Sahaab to perform before him".........
He also confirmed the fact that an invitation was duly sent to the prime minister's office but he expressed his inability to grace the occasion owing to his taxing and pre determined schedule that left him with little time to indulge in such music concerts in which his favourite artistes were congregating under one roof...........
It is an inalienable fact that music and humanity are indeed religions that transcend all man made barriers and unabashedly celebrate the universality of the human spirit; so when will the rest of us take a leaf out of their book and follow suit..........
This annual event will be on between April 8 and 12; 2015 and once again reaffirm Varanasi's iconic status of a land (city) where humanism prevails above all............
