Why does Karan Johar always choose style over substance??? his style of film making seems to be taking the Hindi film industry back into the medieval ages rather than forwards and into a new era of natural and effortless story telling where the subject and not candy floss and feel good situations are king.....
One expected greater things from Mr. Johar after the epochal 'My Name is Khan' as the subject was king in this rather candid film about the trials and tribulations of a minority community that has unfortunately come to be identified with the evils of terrorism after the horrifying and heart rending events of 9/11.......
The above mentioned flick reinforced and enhanced Karan's credentials as a film maker of substance who has his heart and soul in the right place and even went on to rake in awards, do wonders at the box office and find Karan the grudging respect and admiration of his fellow film makers and contemporaries.......
Unfortunately, Dharma Productions latest release "Student of the Year" has put paid to all the heady expectations that yours truly and every other ardent follower/lover of cinema of substance had from this talented film maker who has handled varied subjects with aplomb and consummate ease in the past.......
"Student of the Year" only serves to enforce every goddamned cliche that has been forced down our throat by every wannabe Hindi film maker with any pretensions towards being the next Francis Ford Coppola; this testosterone ridden sorry apology for a film only seems to be aimed at those out to get a cheap thrill and ogle and drool at/over six pack abs, chiselled and toned bodies.......
As for the debutantes while Siddharth Malhotra does show immense promise with his smouldering intensity and intrinsic ability to emote with his eyes, unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Varun Dhawan who is a big let down with his hackneyed style of acting and wooden mannerisms; Alia Bhatt does have her own elfin charm and does show potential while shaking her booty, but alas! has a long way to go when it comes to matching her half sister Pooja's histrionic abilities.........
All one can say in conclusion is that though this film might just end up raking the big bucks at the box office and turnstiles; it is far from being Karan Johar's best effort, only see this candy floss flick if you are either an unabashed Rishi Kapoor fan like yours truly cause the thespian really sets the screen ablaze with his principal/head of the educational institution act or then if drooling over chiselled bodies is your calling card....
