IGNORANCE IS BLISS (?????)

More than 80% of Hyderabad's women are blissfully (?) unaware of their rights and laws already in existence expressly meant to ensure their safety, security and other allied constitutional provisions.........

82% of the women in Hyderabad show a shocking lack of knowledge and complete ignorance about the Justice Verma committee/commission and it's recommendations pertaining to amendments that need to be made to existing laws despite having participated in numerous rallies organised in the wake of the rape incident in the national capital.........

A comprehensive survey carried out by an industry body amongst Hyderabad's young women also threw up these startling facts:

# 38% of the women polled have little or no knowledge at all about elections and the electoral process......

# 43% of Hyderabad's young women have never bothered to go to their neighbourhood polling booth and cast their votes........

# 50% of Hyderabad's young women are totally unaware of the minimum wages and equal remuneration acts and legal provisions regarding the same........

Jaw dropping, earth shattering and utterly shocking in this information over drive age where information can be garnered at the click of a mouse did I just hear someone say; shocking or not the fact remains that women continue to be exploited due to their own shortcomings and relevant information not percolating down to them in an easy to decipher and user friendly manner..........

This is where community initiatives like Hyderabad for Change' can play a significant and salient role; firstly let's get down to the street level and try and ascertain the awareness levels of the women out on the streets about issues related to their daily existence.........

Let us call for an emergency meeting of the initiative's governing council within the next three days, brainstorm, put our brains together and conjure up a user friendly questionnaire that will have at least twenty questions pertaining to women related issues contained in it.........

Allocate duties according to each committee member's schedules and spread out across the length and breadth of the twin cities and try and garner as much information as you can in this regard.........

Collate and sift the information thus garnered and sub divide the same into various categories like safety and security related issues, identity related issues, existing laws related issues and son and so forth, approach experts in each field to try and find out relevant and timely solutions for these very same problems and then get back to the respondents with solutions for their problems........

United we stand, divided we fall, numbers always do make a significant difference to the success and failure of such community initiatives so let's set ego's and prejudices aside and approach NGO's and other organisations working on similar issues to come up with a united forum and plan of action in this regard.........

Frequent places where young women congregate especially on weekends and disseminate the information available with you in an easy to understand and easy to decipher manner as awareness and constant questioning are the foundation stones on which any seemingly enlightened society is based.......

Procrastination and prevarication have become the calling cards of the Hyderabad for Change' initiative and our co-ordinator Khushboo Choudhary has been making tall promises but has yet failed to deliver on a single promise till date....Other fellow committee members have also woefully failed to back up their tall claims made at the Peoples' Plaza on Necklace Road with commensurate actions with the meeting called at Lamakaan a couple of Sundays back being a case in point........

Khushboo Choudhary and yours truly were the only two people who turned up for the meeting while at least four others failed to turn up for the same despite confirming their participation via e-mail......

Sashank Rajwadi and yours truly are the only one's who have stuck to their commitments made in this regard; yours truly has been sharing relevant information through his facebook, blog as well as Hyderabad for Change' posts on a daily basis and Sashank and me also did try to send out the message of humanism above all and equal rights for women through the Hum Bhi Insaan Hain musical initiative......

Fellow committee members do kindly wake up from your deep slumber and look alive and awake, providing an equal playing field to 50% of our country's population is the onerous responsibility that we have entrusted to our own selves so let's get on with this very same business.........
