Trust the stormy petrel of Indian cricket Gautam Gambhir to tell it like it is; this 32 year old who has represented the country with distinction at the highest level is as well known for his prickly demeanour on the field as for his take no prisoners style of functioning as IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders..........
In an informal interaction with the media just before the qualifying rounds ofthe forthcoming Champions' Trophy that features the the top ten T 20 club/county/domestic sides of the world; Gambhir said that winning is the only thing that matters to him and he would rather be known as "a mean winner rather than a polite loser"...........
Taking the argument further; Gauti said that he was engaged in a casual game of badminton with his two best friends Viru (Virender Sehwag) and Ashu (Ashish Nehra) just before appearing for the scheduled media interaction and while his two yaars while playing the game just for the heck of it; he was solely focussed on winning the game and only relaxed when he had given his two mates a sound thrashing..........
On being asked whether he took his "Gambhir" or rather forbidding image a little too seriously or far and whether he was a laid back personality off the field; Gauti quipped that he was what he was and it was a little too late in the day for him to change his stripes in order to curry favour with his legions of critics and win their much sought after approval in the bargain............
Summarising his team's chances of winning the prestigious and much sought trophy; Gambhir said that his side was obsessed with the very thought of winning the same and the same thought ruled his subconscious mind; it would indeed be premature to say that we will emerge triumphant, but I will certainly say that we have a more than even chance of winning this one as we are playing in familiar climes and conditions while the opposing teams from the West Indies, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will have to accustom themselves to unfamiliar and alien conditions before making a serious bid for the trophy...........
Winding up the impromptu and somewhat rare media interaction the 32 year old said that making an appearance in Indian colours in the World Cup 2015 was the driving force for him and that he would continue competing with the same levels of gravity and intensity as he was more than comfortable in his own skin and least interested in either making friends with people or seeking their approval...........
That indeed is the Gautam Gambhir I have known for years and come to love so dearly as he indeed is a man after my own heart..........
