Here is a resounding rejoinder for all those folks who harbour beliefs about the succeeding generations of Indians being totally self centred, obsessed and caring for little other apart from their very own beings........
In a welcome move that will surely go a long way in nurturing and protecting our glorious nation's resplendent history; Aditya Mehta a class XII student of the national capital's Delhi Public School (R.K. Puram) has successfully managed to coerce his school authorities into adopting an ancient stepwell or "baoli" in the neighbouring area as it's very own........
Aditya who holds a deep rooted belief about baolis being significant water harvesting and renewal centres apart from their historicity and inherent beauty has been ceaselessly working on a book of his very own about the life, times and historicity of ten such baolis in and around the national capital for the last ten odd months and literally stepped on this baoli in question during the course of his research.........
Inspired and galvanised by the painstaking research and efforts of one of their very own; the DPS (R.K. Puram) authorities deemed it well worth their time to hold an exhibition on the sorry state of Delhi's numerous baolis and it's celebrated chairperson Shyama Chona even condescended to release Aditya's much awaited book appropriately entitled "Baolis of Delhi" on the occasion..........
Lauding Aditya's sterling efforts the school's principal D.R.Saini said" Baolis are historically significant because of their historical antiquity and immense value and Aditya has been eminently successful how a significant majority of them are languishing in a neglected and sorry state; thanks to Aditya all the 8,000 children of our school are now focussing their concerted time and efforts on highlighting the long forgotten R.K. Puram or Munirka Baoli and every class shall be presenting either a short skit, performance or project to highlight these very same structures once we formally adopt this sublime structure come October 1"...........
This particular baoli or stepwell was built during the Lodhi era and essentially comprises of intricate designs and figures; three tombs and a massive mosque also adjoin the structure thereby giving it it's added lustre and historical significance; DPs will be taking on the onerous responsibility of maintaining and improving this breath taking structure, keeping it clean and pristine and last but not the least spreading the word around about it's very existence............
Here's hoping and praying that many more such Aditya's step forward and succeed in giving our oft neglected and discarded historical monuments the pride, recognition and honour they so richly deserve..........
