One always tends to look for the exceptions rather than the rules or then should I say that one always tends to look up to those doughty folks who stand far apart from the madding crowd and amply display the sterling qualities and character to live life on their own terms and be their own person........
Her colleagues fondly call her the P.T. Usha of the Delhi Police Force and constable Lalitha Madhwal lives up to the lofty name and a lot more besides as she is always running and is constantly on her toes when not in hot pursuit of criminals of all hues........
Living up to her nomenclature or adopted name, Lalita stood first in the Delhi State Masters Athletic Championship in both the 1,500 as well as 5,000 metre categories; she also represented Delhi with distinction in the recently concluded in the 35th National Masters Athletic Championships and breasted the tape in record time in the 4X400 metre relay race thereby annexing the gold medal for her proud team........
Not content with resting on her laurels, she has now notched up the noteworthy feat of qualifying for the World Masters Championship and is all set to do the country proud in Japan later this year.......
Not one to tom tom her achievements or sing paeans in her own glory, she modestly and somewhat shyly admits that she began her running saga in a somewhat amateurish manner by joining an amateur group that calls itself the Park 21 Runners Group.......
What however began as a fad or then an effort to maintain prime physical condition, soon became and obsession as Lalita graduated to running in various competitions within the very same Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium where she had taken the first steps in her inspiring journey.....
A graduate from the prestigious Delhi University, Lalita joined the Delhi Police as a constable way back in the year 2000 and also achieved the notable distinction of notching up the much coveted "Best Commando Title" in the year 2001; she has seen the insides of many a police station during her 14 year long career and is currently posted at the South District Police Station where she is an integral part of the Special Task Force.......
The "Asadharan Karya Puraskar" cam her way as she displayed exemplary courage in nabbing notorious criminals without as much as batting an eyelid or pondering over the consequences of her valiant actions; she also expresses her satisfaction at being part of cases that have down as examples in the annals of crime and punishment like the Deepak Bharadwaj, and Ponty Chadha shoot out cases.......
She also self effacingly admits to being a vital cog in the wheel in the team that investigated the landmark Nirbhaya case and thanks the Good Lord for having bestowed these opportunities and blessings on her.......
A proud mother of a 9 year old daughter who has shown the same penchant for achieving laurels in the field of athletics, Lalita says her only aim and ambition is to ensure that she gives her doting daughter the best of both worlds and make sure that her daughter outdoes her mother in her chosen career.......
"Bhagwan Mujhe Itni Shakti de ki main Japan main apne desh ka naam roshan kar sakoon aur itna bal de ki main apne desh ki auraton ko surakshit kar sakoon", this naive, simple, happy and unassuming soul signs off.......
Here's wishing her luck and success in all her endeavours and hoping that other woman take a leaf out of her book and realise that they are indeed second to none and more than capable of doing both themselves as well as their nation proud if they put their minds and souls to their chosen mission in life................
