HOLIDAY: A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY.........

Anything and everything is good for health if taken in small doses and the same logic applies to masala Hindi flicks as well.......
Alas! A.R. Murugadoss's is a tad too long and your attention begins to flag when the totally redundant and obnoxious romantic angle and Govinda in surely what must go down as the most puerile, inane and nonsensical role in his acting career spanning nearly three decades flit across the screen with nauseating regularity..........
Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty is however not without it's redeeming features and moments; Akshay Kumar is in fine form and his new chiselled, sleek, slick and brawny on screen avatar as Virat Bakshi is sure to net him a legion of die hard fans........
The ever dependable Sumeet Raghavan (in his on screen avatar of Akshay Kumar's cop buddy) and newcomer or newbie Freddy Daruwala, the terrorist mastermind who engages in a cat and mouse game with Akshay Kumar till the heady and breath taking climax scene more than hold their own and more than manfully back up Akshay's sterling efforts to play a commando or then should I say anti-terrorist commando with bravado and chutzpah........
However the trio's heroic efforts to rise above the mundane and stereotype are undone by some shoddy writing, clumsy and amateurish editing, songs and background score that only make your attention wander rather than keeping your eyes riveted to the silver screen........
All in all, I would venture to say that Holiday is a bit like a twenty 20 match that loses steam after the 17th over or so; the length of this taut and racy action thriller could easily have been reduced by a whopping 45-50 minutes if the director and editor had conjoined their grey matter and completely done away with the Sonakshi, Govinda and romantic tracks that stick out like sore thumbs and make one want to pull out one's hair (if you have any left) in utter frustration...........
Sad to say, but films/flicks like Holiday do an otherwise more than capable actress like Sonakshi Sinha no credit whatsoever, a little more discernment and due diligence in her choice of on screen appearances will not only embellish her already proven skills as a performer of some mettle but also enhance her credentials as an actress of substance.........
As for Govinda, the less said the better, Chi Chi Bhaiyya is making an appearance on the silver screen after a fairly lengthy interval and his juvenile, amateurish as well as utterly avoidable on screen antics make you wish that this self imposed exile should have continued for the next few months as well.........
Do go out and grace a theatre only if rather lengthy flicks with multiple story tracks are your chosen cup of tea and if you swear by taut, racy, lean, mean and stark films like yours truly does, then you can definitely afford to give the so called "Hit Machine" Akshay Kumar's latest offering a miss as you would hardly be missing out on anything worthwhile by doing so.........
RATING: 2.5/5, manna from heaven only for die hard Akki and Sonakshi fans...........
