What is it with women hailing from the North Eastern Parts of our glorious motherland and the alarmingly increasing crime rate in the National Capital Region as such women are not only at the receiving end, but are also accused of instigating or motivating such crimes of a largely sexual nature.........
I for one am certainly not going to pass judgement on the above issue and will merely state the facts and let you arrive at your own conclusion, as in this case a 21 year old woman from the North Eastern State of Nagaland has alleged or alluded to the fact that she was initially molested and then sexually assaulted by a cab driver who also made a furtive attempt to rape her within the confines of his cab on Sunday evening.........
According to the woman who is gainfully employed as a saleswoman in a boutique located within the debonair echelons of the DLF Promenade Mall in Vasant Kunj, this nightmarish incident occurred when she boarded the cab from Mahipalpur at around 8:25 pm or so on Sunday evening so that she could reach the Ambience Mall in Gurgaon where she was supposed to meet a few of her friends.........
"Though, I hung around twiddling my thumbs for the best part of 20 minutes or so, I could not find and mode of public transport and hence hailed the said cab and boarded it as I was getting late for my rendezvous with my friends, but was rather taken aback when the driver of the cab asked me to join him on the front seat so that he could accommodate a few more passengers on the back seat"............
"I initially curtly refused, but then somewhat relaxed when the cab driver started behaving in a friendly and courteous manner, introducing himself as one Manoj Yadav sole proprietor of an unnamed travel and tours company".............
"Somewhere at the back of my mind a fear and lurking suspicion lingered and I was still wondering why the driver was being uber courteous and friendly towards me and asking me to join him on the front seat; being naturally wary of his friendly overtures, I then asked him to stop the cab and let me off, but was startled out of my wits when he instead revved up the cab and reached out to the back seat and started unceremoniously groping and feeling me up", the victim goes on to say.........
"His gestures and actions grew even more intense and animated as we approached the Rajokri Air Force base and he tried to pull or rather tear of my shirt with one hand, all this while steering the wheel of the cab with one hand"..........
"I then began shouting out for help, but nobody could hear me as the windows of the cab were rolled up and the road was also disconcertingly deserted on that particular stretch; despite the groping and debasing of intimate parts of my anatomy, I somehow managed to keep my wits about me and jump out of the cab at the fast approaching toll gate as traffic would congest at the point"............
"But lo and behold, my plans came to a naught as there was no such congestion at the toll plaza and the driver sailed through the same without really slowing down or stopping as he was one of those who paid the toll on either a weekly or monthly basis; and he also began threatening to kill me and dispose of my mortal remains at a secluded and deserted location if I continued to resist his sexual overtures and fulfil his body's needs..........
"He then proceeded to insert his hands within the confines of my shirt and jeans and my repeated entreaties for mercy seemed to have no effect on him whatsoever as the threats to kill me and dispose of my body grew more animated and virulent"...........
"I then made an effort to roll down one of the windows, unlock one of the doors and jump off in front off the fast approaching Ambience Mall, but he put paid to my efforts by engaging the central locking system and locking the cab even more securely"...........
"The incessant and persistent ringing of my cell phone from within my bags innermost recesses did momentarily startle him and taking advantage of the momentary reprieve, I started blasting the horn of the cab and again reached for one of the door handles"...........
"As his whole attention seemed to be focussed upon my bag and the cell phone within, I somehow managed to prise open one of the cab's doors and jump out though the cab driver managed to flee with both my bag, cash as well as trustworthy high end cell phone"............
"Though, I suffered quite a few bleeding injuries on various parts of my persona, those injuries seemed to be a much better bargain in comparison to the gory end promised by the cab driver", the victim tearfully signs off.......
Passersby and bystanders rushed the 21 year old bleeding and injured woman to a nearby corporate hospital where she was duly treated and subsequently discharged...........
Her ordeal however did not end there and things only got collectively worse as the Gurgaon Police Officials steadfastly refused to register her complaint against the absconding cab driver and give credence to her story about all but being a rape victim..........
"I somehow managed to contact the North East Support Centre's Helpline by requesting a complete stranger to lend me his phone for a few minutes and also inform my guardians who then somehow managed to get two senior police officials to come and see me"..........
"They however proved to be of little or no use as they only kept repeating that I should go and file my/a complaint at the DLF Phase III police station as the alleged crime had occurred within it's jurisdiction, but made no effort whatsoever to wither help me or take cognisance of my narrative"...........
Bruce K. Thanghal, the person in charge of both the North East Support Centre as well as it's helpline says that the Gurgaon cops simply refused to believe the fact that an attempt to rape a young woman was made on their territory............
"Things only got moving after I rang up the DCP (East) Nazneen Bhasin and the victim's statement was duly recorded a little after 4 am or so even though the alleged crime was committed well over six/seven hours back..........
The Gurgaon Police finally condescended to file cases under sections 354 (molestation), 506 (threatening with bodily harm or threat to life), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (assault) and 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal against an assailant who is yet to be identified...........
And thereby hangs a tale of attempted rape that could have turned out to be far more heinous and horrific if the victim had been one of those stereotypical demure, dainty and oh so delicate types who faint and swoon at the merest hint of bodily injury or potential harm...........
As for the Gurgaon cops, the less said the better, as their actions have only served to reinforce the long held stereotype about a potential rape victim bringing the crime upon her and the man involved being innocent until proved guilty beyond all reasonable doubt by a court of law..........
