Our nation's so called "festival of democracy" has claimed it's first "leaderly" victim, what with a local Bahujan Samajwadi Party local leader succumbing to the burns suffered as a result of the deathly embrace of an alleged "human torch".........
This ghastly, dastardly, deplorable and hideous incident occurred in a park in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur town (160 kms or then 100 miles away from the state capital of Lucknow) late on Monday night when a local BSP leader Kamruzamma Fauji was embraced by what came to be described as a "human torch" while participating in a television debate on local issues...........
Fauji a father of nine young children who suffered more than 75% burns as a result of this deathly embrace passed away in a district government hospital late on Friday night while hi assailant who suffered more than 95% burns passed away within two hours of being admitted to the very same hospital on the fateful Monday night.........
An aghast, shocked , bewildered and utterly shaken Doordarshan anchor who was helming the television debate went on to describe the assailant as a human torch who doused himself in petrol, lit a match and went up in flames in a matter of a few fleeting seconds, while investigating police personnel said that prima facie there seems to be no motive or reason behind the deathly attack on the largely nondescript and anonymous political leader..........
But sticking to an age old script and political expediency, the victim's elder brother one Khalikurzama went on to describe the seemingly insane attack on his younger brother as a a "diabolic" political conspiracy hatched against the victim by his political opponents and also demanded the immediate arrest of his political rivals as well as an independent probe by a sitting or retired high court judge..........
Fauji and four other local politicians were actively participating in a nightly debate on the state owned television broadcaster and the debate was winding down when out of nowhere the said "human torch" appeared on the scene and engulfed Fauji in it's deathly embrace, two other politicians who made a herculean effort to douse the flames engulfing the duo also suffered from minor burns (15 to 20%) as a result of their actions and are undergoing treatment at a government run medical facility.........
Whatever may be the reason behind this unimaginable horror, it once again has thrown open the raging debate about adequate security for political persons and the need to sanitise all such live "public" events or then make sure that necessary security measures are in place.......
