In this age of "multi Crorepati" netas, jet setting rallies, doling out largesse in cash and kind in an effort to buy votes and last but not the least, fudging figures on the affidavits filed before the Election Commission, here comes a candidate with only Rs.100 to his credit..........
A true "karmayogi" if there ever was one, 37 year old Ramanujan Patel who only has Rs. 100 in his personal kitty is certainly the "poorest" candidate of them all by any stretch of the imagination........
A post graduate and a journalist by profession, Ramanujan has been going through an extended rough spell professionally and that is why he only has Rs.100 to his credit........
Representing the relatively unknown Samyak Parivartan Party Patel had to borrow the requisite Rs. 1,000/- in order to comply with the Election Commissions Guidelines of all candidates having bank accounts and rather unabashedly says that he put down the fact that he only had Rs. 100 to his credit in his electoral affidavit.........
Confronted with the rather daunting prospect of besting formidable candidates like the Congress's Ajay Maken, Meenakshi Lekhi of the BJP as well as the Aam Aadmi party's Ashish Khaitan in the battle for the national capital's New Delhi Lok Sabha Constituency, Patel says, "I will do my best as for the rest, it is all in the hands of the almighty".........
Clad in a rather crumpled, dishevelled and dirty oversized kurta pyjama and a pair of tattered white sports shoes, he valiantly goes on from street to street virtually all on his own in an effort to drum up support and introduce himself to the electorate..........
"16 friends and well wishers selflessly came forward and pooled their resources so that I could pay the security deposit of Rs. 25,000/- so that I could contest the elections".........
"I embody the struggles, triumphs and losses that are part and parcel of an average Indian's life and am a living example of what the shenanigans, sins of omission and commission of the political classes of this country have reduced the average Indian to"...........
"My friends and well wishers love and blessings are my strength and my unflinching and unwavering belief in myself is my calling card, I am supremely confident that the man on the street will identify with me and step forward to support me in my endeavours as I will eternally be their servant and never ever aspire to become their master", Patel signs off.......
Well, one really wonders who is the "real" representative of the Aam Aadmi, a former journalist who has crores of rupees to his credit or then an out of work journalist who lives in a two room dwelling in the national capital's humble Shakarpur locality (East Delhi)and uses the same as his electoral office as he cannot afford to rent out an office of his own.........
