No matter on whichever foot the shoe is, the untimely demise of a young one. especially a senseless and barbaric one is certainly cause for concerns and raises several questions about the civility levels within our supposedly civilised society........
A teenaged boy was mercilessly/savagely beaten to death by the irate and vengeful family members of his female friend as he had committed an unpardonable and seemingly dastardly crime in their view by trying to meet her well after the sun had set on that fateful Saturday evening/night........
A resident of Punjab's Nangal Kalan village, 19 year old Kanwaljit Singh was sighted in the company of his girl friend by her elder sibling one Gurdeep Singh who was so incensed by the sight that he urgently summoned his other family members to venture out and teach the "errant" boy a lesson that he would never forget........
This lesson however assumed deathly overtones when the male members of the girl's family laid their hands on iron rods, sticks, batons and other such material and then proceeded to beat the hapless and overwhelmingly outnumbered young man senseless without paying heed to either his pleas/entreaties or protestations of innocence........
In a cruel twist of fate, Jarnail Singh, the girl's father condescended to call up Leela Singh (Kanwaljit's father) just after midnight and cursorily asked him to come and retrieve the senseless body of his beloved son who had been duly punished for his dastardly crime........
Leela Singh was confronted by the heart rending and blood curdling spectacle of his son lying in a rapidly spreading pool of his own blood, fearing for his son';s life, he bundled his son into his vehicle and rushed towards the nearest government hospital.........
His worst fears were however realised when the doctors at the Mansa hospital informed him that his son had breathed his last enroute and was brought dead to the hospital........
Though grieving for his son, the sorrowful father wasted no time in registering a case against his son's murderers and the area police has so far booked cases under all the applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code against the girl's father Jarnail Singh, brother Gurdeep Singh, Uncle Gulab Singh and the husband of the village's sarpanch one Kewal Singh who willingly participated in the brutality rather than bringing matters on an even keel........
"The statement of the girl who had to be admitted to the same hospital where her male friend was taken as she had collapsed on seeing the grotesque sight of her male friend being ravaged by her male relatives has been recorded in the presence of an officer of the court and she has corroborated the evidence collected against the male members of her family by the police during the course of their preliminary investigations", according to the statement made by the investigating officer........
Sassi Punno, Heer Raanjha, Sohni Mahiwaal, the lsit of legendary lovers emanating from the land of the five rivers is both exhaustive as well as seemingly endless, then why oh why is the pious, blessed and sublime emotion of love still treated as a cardinal sin??????
Why do star crossed lovers who only pay heed to the language of their budding hearts pay with their lives more often than not, one wonders when divine wisdom will dawn on our so called "elders" who are more than accepting of the sins of omission and commission committed by members of their own generation, but equally demonic when the younger matters of their families commit the "unpardonable" crime of falling in love........
