Meet, Latha Bhagwan Kare a 61 year old grandmother who achieved the unique distinction of winning the 3 kilometre race which was part of the first ever Baramati marathon; what makes her triumph even more heady and epochal is the fact that Ms. Kare achieved this feat while running in a traditional nine yard Maharashtrian saree and without any footwear whatsoever adorning her feet........
Latha Kare originally hails from Buldhana and migrated to Maharashtra strongman and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar's pocket borough seeking greener pastures and fruitful employment opportunities........
"I am accustomed to lengthy and arduous morning walks, but never ever summoned up the courage to break out into a trot in full public view as the budding fear of becoming an object of unwitting mirth and lasting ridicule always inhibited me from taking up running or jogging as a full time pursuit", this unassuming and self effacing grandmother goes on to say........
She candidly admits that the relentless and constant stares of the fellow contestants at her rather "quaint and eccentric attire" and "unadorned" feet did make her rather uncomfortable but the sense of quiet confidence and age old desire to triumph against seemingly insurmountable odds gave her renewed confidence in her own abilities.........
"The sniggers and snide remarks of my fellow contestants about me motivated me to find undiscovered and inextinguishable sources of energy within me and enabled me to leave all of them behind in my wake", she goes on to add.......
"This maiden triumph has given me a quiet sense of achievement and urged me to continue participating in even more such events as long as my body and mind allows me to do so", the indomitable lady signs off........
