SECOND FREEDOM STRUGGLE

April 5,2011 will surely go down as an epochal day in the annals of Indian history as the septugenarian Gandhian, Shri Anna Hazare began his fast unto death at the capital's hotspot for political agitations namely the ubiquitous Jantar Mantar. This fast unto death for increasing the participation of the civil society in the war or jihad against corruption has certainly caught the fancy of both young and old and has the powers that be sitting up in consternation and going round the bend in their efforts to find a formula with which they can save face and emerge from this sticky situation with their honour intact.
The fire has spread far and wide and what began as a spark on April 5 has now turned into a full fledged inferno that threatens to engulf everybody who is not in conjunction with the collective outpouring of repressed angst and anguish against this monolithic monster of corruption that threatened to do away with all the gains made in 64 years of independence. Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Jammu, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Saddi Dilli have become the epicentres of this volcano which seems all set to usher in an era of honesty and transparency in all walks of life in the very near future.
1975 was the last time that the common man poured into the street while paying heed to Gandhian Jai Prakash Narayan's clarion call to overthrow the then corrupt and authoritarian Indira Gandhi regime and citizens from all walks of life irrespective of age, caste, creed, sect, religion and political lenaings participated in the movement that brought the mighty Indira Gandhi to her knees and 1975 and what is collectively and popularly being called India's second war of independence is unfolding before our very eyes at this moment when most of us are safely ensconed within the air conditioned confines of our offices or lounging rooms instead of venturing out into the blazing sun and strengthening this movement which really is a movement of the people, by the people and for the people in the truest sense of the term.
The organisers of the protest rally and fast unto death have been candid enough to confirm that they did not expect this kind of overwhelming support from the common man or 'goongi jantaa' as the politicians condescendingly choose to refer as, as one of the organisers succintly remarked, "we were expecting around three or so thousand people to turn up and support us in this noble venture dedicated to the cause of the much abused aam aadmi buth were completely overwhelmed and humbled when more than 30,000 people turned up to support us on the opening day of this fast unto death".
More than three hundred people are sitting with the people's icon Anna Hazare willing to risk their life and limb in the cause of the betterment of the common citizen and the organisers only expect this groundwell of support to go into lakhs on the weekend that begins from this evening i.e. April 8,2011 onwards. Corporate head honchos, Industrial Technology Professionals, Bollywood stars, media czars, advertising acolytes, retired ambassadors and civil servants, housewives, college and school students and even toddlers have poured out into the streets in a collective outpouring of support for this fast unto death undertaken by a true people's leader ANNA HAZARE.
This unassuming activist hailing from Maharashtra's backwaters has suddenly donned the mantle of the people's icon and provided the populace with the leadership that the people were so eagerly and impatiently looking for, one did see a similar mass movement taking shape after the tragic events that unfolded on 26/11, but the same dissipated into nothingness in the absence of a credible leader who could give shape to and carry forward this spark which fizzled out before it could assume the form of a raging inferno.
Anna Hazare has rekindled the ray of hope both in the hearts and minds of millions of Indians and given them the hope of a corruption and graft free India where merit and only merit will determine your net worth in society. So let's all add our voices to the clarion call "ANNA HAZARE AAP AAGEY BADO HUM AAPKE SAATH HAIN." more power to his elbow. JAI HIND, VANDE MATRAM.
SUNDEEP CHOPRA.
